 Colombia's Weather

Colombia experiences a variety of extreme weather conditions due to its diverse geography. It can range from tropical rainforests to high altitude mountains, resulting in varying temperatures,  rainfall, and humidity throughout  the country. Colombia's weather can be quite fascinating. In some regions, you'll find hot and humid conditions, especially in the coastal areas. On the other hand, higher altitude areas, like the Andes Mountains, can have cooler temperatures and more frequent rainfall. It's this diversity that adds to the charm and uniqueness of Colombia's climate. In an article called "Colombia Weather" it mentions "Colombia is located near the equator so it does not have extreme variations in temperature, although there is a wet and dry season. The climate changes with the altitude, hotter at sea level and cooler at higher elevations, with some peaks bearing snow year round. Temperatures below 2,953 feet average between 75°F and 100°F, while the mid and highlands enjoy a milder weather between 50°F and 69°F. The high mountains above 14,764 feet are always cold and covered in snow and ice.

Most of the population lives in the temperate coffee growing regions above 2,953 feet or in the colder wheat and potato growing lands between 6,496 and 11,483 feet. Wet seasons is from April-June and September-November with Colombia’s Pacific coast getting slammed with one of the world’s highest amount of precipitation per year, around 200 inches. The Guajira Peninsula is the driest part of the country, receiving only about 30 inches of rain a year.

El Nino and La Nina phenomena affect the climate and can cause heat waves, droughts or floods and unseasonal cold weather. The Guajira Peninsula is also prone to tropical storms and hurricanes, particularly in August and September."

  1. Hey Adrian, it was very fascinating reading your blog on the variety of extreme weather conditions in Columbia. I do not know much about Columbia as a whole besides I know an old family friend who lives there and knew nothing about there whether conditions or hazards. The tropical rainforest and high altitude mountains sound very interesting it would be great to see a picture but personally the hot and especially humid conditions don't sound too fun to me as I am not a fan of high humidity. Can't wait to hear more about Columbia as we move on!
